Today we are all worried about our health. We worry about what we are putting in our bodies and what we shouldn’t put in our bodies. We look for healthier ways to cook and clean. Coconut oil is a versatile product that can be used for so many things from cooking to skin care.
Because of it’s saturated fat content, it used to be thought that coconut oil was unhealthy. Coconut oil has incredible antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti fungal properties. It is made up of medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs), which have been shown to have a lot of health benefits.
Coconut oil is also full of lauric acid, which is found in human breast milk. It converts to monolaurin which is useful in boosting immunity and fighting diseases and viruses. Lauric acid has been shown to help prevent some cancers.
There are many ways you can incorporate coconut oil into your lifestyle to take advantage of all the benefits.
Cooking. Coconut oil is a stable oil, which means that it doesn’t break down when heated. You can swap out any oil you use in cooking for the same amount of coconut oil with almost an identical amount of calories.
Smoothies. You can put some in your smoothies for added benefits. The plus is, in a smoothie, I don’t even taste it, so if you don’t like the taste this is a great way to still get the benefits.
Skin lotion. Coconut oil makes a great skin lotions. It absorbs fast, has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, and I think it smells great. Also, it doesn’t leave your skin feeling oily, instead it leaves your skin feeling silky smooth. You can even use it on your baby’s sensitive skin, assuming she isn’t allergic to it.
Eye makeup remover. I love that coconut oil helps remove my eye makeup. It smells great, helps with wrinkles, and I am moisturizing all at once! How amazing.
Chap stick. As with all the other uses, using coconut oil as a chap stick has many benefits and it is one of my favorite ways to prevent and treat chapped lips.
Shaving cream. Works great for shaving with no irritation, again with the added benefits of moisturizing and all the others mentioned before.
Massage oil. Feeling like a nice romantic night with a massage? Grab the coconut oil for all the great benefits.
Diaper cream. Because it is an oil it repels moisture on baby’s bottom, but also because of the antimicrobial and antibacterial properties it helps treat and prevent diaper rash.
There are so many health benefits. I have outlined a few above such as he antimicrobial and antibacterial properties and moisturizing, but what are some of the other benefits? To start the high lauric acid can help lower cholesterol and blood pressure, while not increasing LDL. Some studies show that it may improve thyroid health.
Because it travels directly to the liver, coconut oil can even help in weight loss. Since it travels directly to the liver it is used for energy and not stored as fat. The best part, it has been shown to help with stubborn belly fat! It can also help with absorption of calcium and vitamin D, thereby improving bone strength. Due to the antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties it can help fight and even prevent infections.
