If you are new to blogging you may wonder how to get your name and your blog out there. This is why you should guest post. What better way for people to read your work, get to know you, and link back to your site so they can find more of your writing.
With that being said, there is a lot of skepticism around guest posting. In the past, companies and individuals have used guest posting as a way to place their spam links, or irrelevant links, on other sites. They have even been paid for link placement, then try to guest post on other sites for free to keep the money. Because of this, many bloggers are very careful when it comes to accepting guest posts (read this post also).
Now, there is a right way and a wrong way to go about guest posting. First off, you need to have your site established. If you have a blog already and you use social media, you may already have a small following. Guest posting will just be a way to find more potential readers.
The second thing you need to consider is where you are guest posting. You want to guest post on sites that are relevant to your niche. If you are a mom blog, don’t go writing a post on a car blog, unless you also happen to write about cars. This is where guest posting is spammy. Stick to sites that are relevant to your niche and everything will be fine.
You also need to think about how you are going to contact these sites. You need to include your blog URL so they know you are a legitimate blog. You also should include some of your best posts, either on your blog or as a guest post. You also want to make sure that you are not copy and pasting the email. It is time consuming, but every time you pitch a site about guest posting you need to write a fresh email to make it personal, complete with topic ideas that actually fit in with the blog.
When writing a post for another site you have to keep in mind that the individual who owns the blog has built up a community and a following who trust them. Because of this they should only accept your post if it is well written and speaks to them. You should always do your best work when writing, but you should make sure to do your best on the guest posts you send out.
This post should also remain original to the site it is posted on. I mean that you shouldn’t publish the post on your blog or offer it to another blog as a guest post. Google doesn’t like duplicate or copied content, so it is best to keep everything original. If you want to write a similar post for your blog, go ahead, just make sure you don’t plagiarize yourself, or you can post a teaser on your site and link to the original post. You can also talk to the blog owner, some sites will allow you publish a post on your site after so many days or months.
Be prepared for rejection, either when you first contact them, or even after you have sent the post. Again, the owners of the blog have to do what is right for them and their readers. Don’t give up though. Ask them what they didn’t like and try to learn from it. Maybe in a few months you can try to write a post for them again, but in the meantime, keep writing for your blog and trying to write guest posts for other sites.
Lastly, don’t try for “big” blogs right out of the gate, you will get rejected unless your writing is excellent. I am talking about sites like Huffington Post, Washington Post, Scary Mommy, and others. I am sure these blogs get 100s if not 1,000s of guest post requests a month and they are only going to take the best. Also, I am sure they do their homework, and if they can’t find your writing when they Google you, chances are they won’t trust you.
These are just the things to consider when guest posting, but I bet you are wondering why you should write for other blogs when you have a hard enough time keeping up with your own blog?
In the early days of your blog, writing for other sites can help you gain readers and followers. Often times when you post on another site they will share your post with their readers on social media, many of which may not have heard of you yet. They will read the post, like what they see, and click on your link. If it isn’t spammy and they find more posts they like, they may stick around, come back, or subscribe to your newsletter if you have one.
Having these backlinks on other sites can help move your blog up in the search results. When someone searches for something on Google they often go through the first page, maybe two, then try a different search. The more relevant pages your site is linked on, the better it will look to Google, meaning your site will move up in the rankings.
It can be fun as well. It is fun to be able to write for a different site and to change up your writing a little bit and to write about something a little different than you normally do on your site.
If you are running a blog and not guest posting you should get started soon. Writing quality posts for other sites can help grow your readership.
With that being said, I am always open to writing for quality sites. If you would like a guest post from me, feel free to contact me and let me know. We might be able to work something out.
